Friendships are great but they can be messy and stressful. Having someone who has you back is important. Every believer needs a godly friend who they can share their fears, failures, and with faith. Godly friends don’t just talk about the weather, or sports, or their hobbies and political views, they also talk and share Jesus with each other. Godly friends share Bible verses with each other and hold each other accountable.
Look at Proverbs 27:17, “Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another” (ESV). In biblical days, they way they sharpened a dull blade was to rub it against a very sharp blade. Repetitive action would create friction or heat and the result was a sharp blade. Authentic godly friendships are completely honest with each other. Look at Galatians 6:1-2, “Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. (2) Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ” (ESV).
Most Christians wear masks. Some hide their true selves from other Christians for fear of rejection or being judged. We are better together. Look at Ecclesiastes 4:9-12, Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. (10) If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble. (11) Likewise, two people lying close together can keep each other warm. But how can one be warm alone? (12) A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken” (NLT).
Finding someone who you can be that honest with and they be that honest with you is a challenge today. You cannot have trust without truth and you can’t share truth without trust. Look at James 5:16, “Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results” (NLT). Healing and victory over sin comes through confessing them to another trusted Christian. There is no victory without working past the devil’s trickery. He will convince you that there is no one you can trust or you can handle this alone. That is a lie. Love you, Pastor Kelly
Meditate on this verse: Proverbs 24:18, “There are “friends” who pretend to be friends, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother” (TLB).
Pray this prayer: “Dear Jesus, I love You. Help me find such a friend who I can share my fears, my failures and my faith with in life. I don’t want to stand alone and be defeated. And let me be that kind of friend to them as well. Thank you, Jesus. Amen."
