Good morning Southside. Parables in the Bible are some of the most encouraging, uplifting and confronting verses in the Bible. Today, we are going to look at Proverbs 30:5-6:

“Every word of God is tested; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him. (6) Do not add to His words, Or He will reprove you, and you will be proved a liar” (NASB).

For most evangelical conservative Christians we believe with all our heart 2 Timothy 3:16-17, “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; (17) so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work” (NASB). If Scripture is not inspired by God, if Scripture is not inerrant, and if Scripture is not infallible, then we of all people are the most to be pitied. We stake our spiritual lives on this truth. We stake our eternal lives on this truth.

God submits His wisdom to us through His holy Word, the Bible. For us to know wisdom, God has to reveal it to us. His wisdom is a shield to and for us. We are not to add to it or take away from it. To do so is to sit in judgment on God’s Word. This was the problem with Adam and Eve in Genesis 3. They did not see that God’s word was enough for them and at times we are the same. When God challenges us through His word, we at times think we know better than God.

For example, “I know what God says about living together and having premarital sex, but it is way too expensive to live in two different locations.” Or, “I know what God says about divorce, but you do not know my spouse.” Or, “I know what God says about submitting to those in authority over us, but you do not know my boss.” We in our own arrogance and rebellion think our situation is unique and God’s Word does not apply to us. We think that we are the exception. When you lack wisdom, ask God for it. That is the point of James 1:5

The background for Proverbs 30:5-6 is from David in 2 Samuel 22:31 and Psalm 18:30-31. For David, all of God’s Words were true and trustworthy (see Psalm 12:6-7, Psalm 19:9b, Psalm 19:10a, Psalm 105:19b, and Psalm 119:140). Only those who seek the Lord do so because they trust in His holy word. They trust the Lord’s words because they trust the Lord. They trust the Lord because they have cultivated and nurtured a growing and maturing relationship with the Lord. Such a person has a “fear of the Lord.”

Reflection Assignment: When it comes to trusting God’s Word, do you without question? Do you refuse to use yourself as the exception to God’s Word? When are you inclined to be like Adam and Eve in Genesis 3

Scripture To Meditate On: Hebrews 4:12,”For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart” (NASB).

Prayer To Pray: “Dear Lord, I confess there are times I make exceptions for my attitudes and actions when it comes to Your Word. I ask for Your forgiveness. I am desperate for wisdom from you through Your Word. I want to have “the fear of the Lord” in me to trust You no matter what. I love You Lord. In Jesus’ name, Amen!”

I love you Southside! – Pastor Kelly
