Good morning Southside! I am following The One Year Chronological Bible reading suggestion and any Bible verses you see highlighted in bold (ex. John 3:16), means it is a link to that verse. All you have to do is click on the reference and it will take you to the verse online. Our daily devotional for today comes from Acts 1:6-11. There are many reasons I love the Book of Acts, but the main reason is the Holy Spirit is given to the church. Jesus kept His promise to His disciples and to us. You can read that in John 14:16-28. In this passage we see that angels told the disciples that the same Jesus they saw ascend would return one day.
In this text Jesus told His disciples they would be His witnesses. The Greek word is where we get our English word “martyr.” Jesus said, “You will be My martyrs.” How does that ring with you? Not church member? Not deacon? Not Sunday school teacher? Not Roman Road explainer. No! Jesus said, “Martyr!” This goes back to what Jesus had told His disciples in Luke 9:23, “If any of you wants to be My follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow Me” (NLT). The path of discipleship is death to selfish desires and potentially the death of your physical body.
Once the Holy Spirit came to the disciples at Pentecost, we no longer saw fearful hiding men. They are boldly sharing the Gospel with no fear of death. Why? To a genuine Christ follower, Spirit filled believer, “death has no victory and it has no sting” (1 Cor. 15:55). Jesus told His disciples that day that when the Holy Spirit came, they would receive power. This is where we get our English “dynamite.” I have never held a stick of dynamite but I know what it can do.
What is that power for? To be His witness in the world. If you do not have it, it may indicate you are not His. The Holy Spirit and His power is promised to each and every believer and therefore to be a witness is a given. It is impossible for a genuine Christian to be powerless. If it is, then Jesus lied, which is impossible. The only major liar in this world is the devil and according to Jesus, he is the father of lies and has been that way from the beginning. There is no truth at all in the devil (John 8:44) .Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life (John 14:6).
Reflection Assignment: Do you sense the Spirit’s power in you? Why or why not? How do you feel about the words “witnesses” versus “martyrs”? Do you feel you have “dynamite” in you or dribble in you? Why? Based on today’s devotional, what is your next step with the Lord and why?
Scripture To Meditate On: Acts 4:33, “The apostles testified powerfully to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and God’s great blessing was upon them all” (NLT).
Prayer To Pray: “Dear Lord, I want that dynamite power that comes from the Holy Spirit to witness for You. My life is not my own. I have been bought with a price and if it is Your will for me to die for You, so be it because You died for my life. Thank You Lord. In Jesus’ name, Amen!”
I love you Southside! – Pastor Kelly
